Areca Nut Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR areca nut market amounted to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Peru (X kg) and Guyana (X kg) prevails in exports structure, together committing 96% of total exports. Brazil (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2017 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +48.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest areca nut supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports.

In Peru, areca nut exports declined by an average annual rate of -65.5% over the period from 2017-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+106.5% per year) and Guyana (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -33.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 101% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of areca nuts were imported in MERCOSUR; jumping by 11,811% compared with the previous year. In general, imports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 39,347% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, areca nut imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 41,659%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Colombia represented the largest importer of areca nuts in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 66% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), creating a 33% share of total imports.

Imports into Colombia increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+23.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012-2022. Colombia (+65 p.p.) and Argentina (+32 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest areca nut importing markets in MERCOSUR were Colombia ($X) and Argentina ($X).

In terms of the main importing countries, Argentina, with a CAGR of +29.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -47.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 217% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
