Artichoke Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR artichoke market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -3% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Artichoke Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, artichoke production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 44%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Peru (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of artichoke production, accounting for 66% of total volume. Moreover, artichoke production in Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Argentina (X tons), threefold.

In Peru, artichoke production decreased by an average annual rate of -4.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-2.8% per year) and Chile (-6.8% per year).

The average artichoke yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 3.6% against 2021. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 9.4%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the artichoke yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The artichoke harvested area shrank to X ha in 2022, which is down by -9.7% on 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of artichokes decreased by -70.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artichoke exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 164% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Colombia (X tons) was the main exporter of artichokes, comprising 77% of total exports. Peru (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Argentina (5%). Brazil (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to artichoke exports from Colombia stood at -3.8%. At the same time, Argentina (+27.2%) and Brazil (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Peru (-23.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Colombia (+48 p.p.), Argentina (+4.9 p.p.) and Brazil (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Peru saw its share reduced by -38.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the largest artichoke supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Colombia totaled -3.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (-18.8% per year) and Argentina (+29.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 57% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+19.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, supplies from abroad of artichokes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 2,777%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artichoke imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 470% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), achieving a 7.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Argentina (X kg) and Paraguay (X kg) - each finished at a 3.3% share of total imports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artichokes imports, with a CAGR of +46.2% from 2012 to 2022. Colombia (-1.2%), Paraguay (-34.3%) and Argentina (-44.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay increased by +73, +1.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artichokes in MERCOSUR, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 0.8% share.

In Brazil, artichoke imports expanded at an average annual rate of +38.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+14.4% per year) and Argentina (-37.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -35.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 725% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
