Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, shipments abroad of articles of peat increased by 122% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 292% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, articles of peat exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 204% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Uruguay prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2022. Brazil (X kg) held a 4.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (4.8%).
Uruguay was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of peat exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Colombia (+8.1%) and Brazil (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Uruguay (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia and Brazil saw its share reduced by -6.4% and -10% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the largest articles of peat supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Uruguay amounted to +15.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+11.3% per year) and Brazil (+17.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, purchases abroad of articles of peat decreased by -44% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports showed a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 288% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, articles of peat imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 276%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Chile prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 72% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Guyana (X tons), together generating a 21% share of total imports. Venezuela (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Chile decreased at an average annual rate of -5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+60.0%), Colombia (+38.5%), Venezuela (+20.0%), Guyana (+12.4%) and Ecuador (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +60.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Argentina (+7.1 p.p.), Guyana (+5.2 p.p.), Ecuador (+3.5 p.p.), Venezuela (+2.5 p.p.) and Colombia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Chile (-16.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of peat in MERCOSUR, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 5.9% share.
In Chile, articles of peat imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+43.7% per year) and Ecuador (+2.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Guyana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
