Stationery Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the MERCOSUR stationery market increased by 2.3% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after eight years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a drastic downturn. Stationery exports declined notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -25.3% compared with 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, stationery exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the main exporter of articles of stationery in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together mixing up a 24% share of total exports. Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of stationery exports, with a CAGR of -4.3% from 2012 to 2022. Ecuador (-6.6%), Colombia (-16.7%), Peru (-20.1%) and Chile (-24.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil and Ecuador increased by +34 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest stationery supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Ecuador, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled -4.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (-18.0% per year) and Ecuador (-6.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of articles of stationery increased by 18% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) was the major importer of articles of stationery in MERCOSUR, creating 88% of total import. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), generating a 4.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uruguay (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of stationery in MERCOSUR, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 14% share.

In Chile, stationery imports increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-4.5% per year) and Ecuador (+1.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
