Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +25.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) represented the major exporter of artificial guts (sausage skins), making up 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uruguay (X tons), generating a 31% share of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the key importer of artificial guts (sausage skins), constituting 55% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together mixing up a 37% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial guts (sausage skins) in MERCOSUR, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to +5.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+4.1% per year) and Argentina (+1.9% per year).
