Barbed Wire Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR barbed wire market stood at $X in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of barbed wire and entanglements increased by 38% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barbed wire exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the largest exporter of barbed wire and entanglements, comprising 54% of total exports. Peru (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Ecuador (7.8%) and Colombia (6.2%). Venezuela (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+28.7%) and Peru (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012-2021. Venezuela experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ecuador (-3.2%) and Chile (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Peru (+11 p.p.) and Colombia (+5.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Chile, Ecuador and Brazil saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -2% and -13.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest barbed wire supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Ecuador ($X), together comprising 87% of total exports. Colombia, Venezuela and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +17.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Ecuador ($X per ton) and Chile ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) and Colombia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, supplies from abroad of barbed wire and entanglements increased by 33% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +52.1% against 2019 indices. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barbed wire imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +95.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of barbed wire imports in 2021 were Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons), together amounting to 84% of total import. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), generating a 5.1% share of total imports. Colombia (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest barbed wire importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Peru ($X), together accounting for 68% of total imports.

Chile, with a CAGR of +13.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 29% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
