Beer Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR beer market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Beer Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, beer production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 9.4%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of beer decreased by -10.4% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +44.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, beer exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main exporter of beer, achieving 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together making up a 17% share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beer exports, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012 to 2022. Argentina (-1.8%) and Peru (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Peru and Argentina saw its share reduced by -5.8% and -10.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest beer supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at +7.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-0.9% per year) and Peru (-0.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 5.2% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X tons of beer were imported in MERCOSUR; waning by -14.8% on 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 37%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, beer imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +28.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Paraguay (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the key importers of beer in 2022, amounting to near 31% and 30% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons), together achieving a 31% share of total imports. Brazil (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +19.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Paraguay ($X) and Argentina ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 76% share of total imports. Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Uruguay, with a CAGR of +17.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
