The MERCOSUR beet-pulp and bagasse market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Beet-Pulp And Bagasse Exports

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X tons of beet-pulp and bagasse were exported in MERCOSUR; waning by -73.2% compared with 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beet-pulp and bagasse exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of beet-pulp and bagasse, namely Chile, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beet-pulp and bagasse exports, with a CAGR of -2.1% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Chile (+33 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) also remains the largest beet-pulp and bagasse supplier in MERCOSUR.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile totaled +4.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 116% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded buoyant growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Chile amounted to +6.5% per year.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, overseas purchases of beet-pulp and bagasse decreased by -4.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, beet-pulp and bagasse imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +110.1% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the major importer of beet-pulp and bagasse, mixing up 69% of total imports. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Ecuador (6.4%). The following importers - Uruguay (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) - each finished at a 5.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to beet-pulp and bagasse imports into Brazil stood at +5.8%. At the same time, Ecuador (+23.2%), Colombia (+18.9%), Uruguay (+18.4%), Peru (+9.1%) and Argentina (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Ecuador (+5 p.p.) and Brazil (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-8.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beet-pulp and bagasse in MERCOSUR, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil stood at +4.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+6.8% per year) and Ecuador (+24.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
