Bituminous Mixtures Market Size in MERCOSUR

After three years of growth, the MERCOSUR bituminous mixtures market decreased by -0.8% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 12%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in MERCOSUR

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of bituminous mixtures increased by 49% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 68%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the major exporter of bituminous mixtures, mixing up 45% of total exports. Chile (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Venezuela (X tons) and Colombia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+37.8%) and Colombia (+29.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-12.9%) and Venezuela (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+18 p.p.), Colombia (+12 p.p.) and Brazil (+4.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Peru (-6 p.p.) and Venezuela (-29.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest bituminous mixtures supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled -2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (+31.4% per year) and Colombia (+25.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, imports of bituminous mixtures in MERCOSUR soared to X tons, with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of bituminous mixtures, namely Chile, Paraguay and Brazil, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +63.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Paraguay ($X) and Brazil ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 96% of total imports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +40.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 34%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
