Book Cover Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR book cover market rose rapidly to $X in 2022, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 1,369% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, book cover exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 673%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The biggest shipments were from Brazil (X tons), together resulting at 96% of total export.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blotting pads and book covers exports, with a CAGR of -14.2% from 2012 to 2022. Brazil (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) also remains the largest book cover supplier in MERCOSUR.

In Brazil, book cover exports declined by an average annual rate of -11.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 112% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Brazil.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Brazil amounted to +2.8% per year.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of blotting pads and book covers increased by 71% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, book cover imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile represented the major importer of blotting pads and book covers in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Guyana (X tons), together generating a 47% share of total imports. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blotting pads and book covers imports, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Colombia (+17.8%), Peru (+7.4%) and Argentina (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Guyana (-2.0%), Brazil (-6.7%) and Venezuela (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+35 p.p.), Colombia (+8.5 p.p.), Argentina (+6.3 p.p.) and Peru (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-8.8 p.p.) and Venezuela (-37.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and Brazil ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Chile, with a CAGR of +12.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 26%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
