The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +51.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 80%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of bottles, jars and other containers of glass exported in MERCOSUR soared to X units, surging by 15% on the year before. Total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -9.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Chile represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 43% of total exports. Peru (X units) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Argentina (18%) and Colombia (9.8%). Paraguay (X units), Brazil (X units) and Venezuela (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bottles, jars and other containers of glass exports, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Argentina (+10.4%), Venezuela (+9.7%), Peru (+1.3%) and Brazil (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Paraguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Colombia (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the largest glass bottle, jar and container supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Peru ($X) and Colombia ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +14.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, rising by 7.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 9.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Argentina ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X units of bottles, jars and other containers of glass were imported in MERCOSUR; rising by 47% on the previous year. Overall, imports showed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 61%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +100.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the major importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X units), Peru (X units), Argentina (X units) and Chile (X units), together generating a 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Uruguay (X units) and Ecuador (X units) - each accounted for a 7.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest glass bottle, jar and container importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Argentina ($X), together accounting for 71% of total imports. Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Among the main importing countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, growing by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per unit), while Uruguay ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
