Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, overseas shipments of breathing appliances and gas masks decreased by -0.5% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, breathing appliances exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Chile represented the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 42% of total exports. Brazil (X units) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Peru (21%), Suriname (6%) and Colombia (5%). Argentina (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest breathing appliances supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 17% share.
In Brazil, breathing appliances exports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (+17.0% per year) and Peru (+15.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Suriname ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+13.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR
Breathing appliances imports reduced markedly to X units in 2022, waning by -18.2% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 389%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, breathing appliances imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Chile (X units) and Peru (X units) represented the key importers of breathing appliances and gas masks in MERCOSUR, together achieving 55% of total imports. Colombia (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Brazil (13%) and Ecuador (6.6%). Argentina (X units) and Uruguay (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +7.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 66% share of total imports. Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Uruguay, with a CAGR of +10.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 77% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Peru ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
