In 2021, the MERCOSUR twig broom market decreased by -4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption saw a mild contraction. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Chile (X units) was the key exporter of brooms and brushes of twigs, committing 52% of total exports. Colombia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 33% share, followed by Peru (7.2%). Brazil (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +44.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, growing by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, twig broom export price increased by +85.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Peru ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of brooms and brushes of twigs imported in MERCOSUR surged to X units, rising by 23% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 112%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, twig broom imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 92%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Chile was the key importer of brooms and brushes of twigs in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was near 59% of total imports in 2021. Peru (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Brazil (X units). All these countries together took near 32% share of total imports. Ecuador (X units) and Paraguay (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to twig broom imports into Chile stood at +18.3%. At the same time, Brazil (+22.5%), Peru (+21.0%) and Ecuador (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +22.5% from 2012-2021. Paraguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Chile (+20 p.p.), Peru (+13 p.p.) and Brazil (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ecuador (-2 p.p.) and Paraguay (-3.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brooms and brushes of twigs in MERCOSUR, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile stood at +17.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+5.0% per year) and Brazil (+12.6% per year).

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, growing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decline.
