The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -33.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 44%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, exports of candles and tapers in MERCOSUR reduced slightly to X tons, with a decrease of -2% on the year before. In general, exports saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 11%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, candles and tapers exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Brazil prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), achieving a 6.5% share of total exports. Suriname (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the candles and tapers exports, with a CAGR of -1.5% from 2012 to 2021. Colombia (-2.6%) and Suriname (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+8.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest candles and tapers supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports.

In Brazil, candles and tapers exports contracted by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (-0.3% per year) and Suriname (-11.6% per year).

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Suriname ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, overseas purchases of candles and tapers were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Chile was the main importer of candles and tapers in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 43% of total imports in 2021. Paraguay (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Brazil (12%), Venezuela (8.6%), Colombia (7.3%) and Peru (6.9%). Ecuador (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Chile increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+10.2%), Peru (+5.8%), Ecuador (+2.3%) and Brazil (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2021. Paraguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Venezuela (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile and Colombia increased by +17 and +3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported candles and tapers in MERCOSUR, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 12% share.

In Chile, candles and tapers imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+3.0% per year) and Paraguay (+1.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
