Carbon Dioxide Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR carbon dioxide market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -2.9% against the previous year. Carbon dioxide exports surged to X tons in 2022, jumping by 80% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), achieving a 4.9% share of total exports.

Argentina experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of carbon dioxide. At the same time, Ecuador (+59.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +59.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ecuador increased by +4.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest carbon dioxide supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports.

In Argentina, carbon dioxide exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -16.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Argentina totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (-0.9%).

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X tons of carbon dioxide were imported in MERCOSUR; waning by -6.1% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbon dioxide imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons) was the largest importer of carbon dioxide, comprising 43% of total imports. Uruguay (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Paraguay (X tons) and Brazil (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 51% share of total imports. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +17.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Uruguay ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Paraguay and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Peru, with a CAGR of +21.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
