The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbon electrode exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Brazil represented the key exporter of carbon electrodes in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together achieving a 33% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon electrode exports from Brazil stood at -18.6%. Peru (-3.1%), Ecuador (-6.5%) and Chile (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ecuador (+14 p.p.), Peru (+5 p.p.) and Chile (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Brazil saw its share reduced by -21.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest carbon electrode supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil totaled -17.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ecuador (-12.7% per year) and Peru (+0.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -33.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 119% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, overseas purchases of carbon electrodes increased by 6.3% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 153%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbon electrode imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 184%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Brazil was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 58% of total imports. Argentina (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Venezuela (7%) and Colombia (6%). The following importers - Peru (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Chile (X tons) - each reached a 12% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carbon electrode imports into Brazil stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Ecuador (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2012-2022. Peru, Colombia and Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Argentina (-3.4%) and Venezuela (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+15 p.p.) and Ecuador (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Argentina and Venezuela saw its share reduced by -6.8% and -9.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carbon electrodes in MERCOSUR, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to +4.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+0.0% per year) and Colombia (+2.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
