The MERCOSUR market for wood boxes, crates and cable drums expanded slightly to $X in 2022, surging by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed notable growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Chile dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X units), constituting an 8% share of total exports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood boxes, crates and cable drums exports, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Chile (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-2.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest wood box and cable drum supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at +5.0%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -20.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood box and cable drum export price decreased by -23.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Chile stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+4.8%).

In 2022, approx. X units of wood boxes, crates and cable drums were imported in MERCOSUR; shrinking by -10.6% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 60%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Peru prevails in imports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 76% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Chile (X units) and Brazil (X units), together creating a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Argentina (X units), Uruguay (X units) and Colombia (X units) - each recorded an 8.8% share of total imports.

Peru experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of wood boxes, crates and cable drums. At the same time, Colombia (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Chile (-8.3%), Brazil (-8.6%), Uruguay (-10.1%) and Argentina (-24.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Peru and Colombia increased by +31 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Peru ($X), Colombia ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 62% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, surging by 17% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood box and cable drum import price increased by +57.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 36%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per unit), while Peru ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+19.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
