After four years of decline, the MERCOSUR cauliflower and broccoli market increased by 1% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. In 2022, the average cauliflower and broccoli yield in MERCOSUR stood at X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the cauliflower and broccoli yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of cauliflower and broccoli production in MERCOSUR shrank modestly to X ha, flattening at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 11%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, cauliflower and broccoli exports in MERCOSUR expanded notably to X tons, picking up by 11% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Ecuador represented the key exporter of cauliflower and broccoli in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 70% of total exports in 2022. Brazil (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Suriname (5.3%). The following exporters - Argentina (X tons) and Peru (X tons) - together made up 6.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cauliflower and broccoli exports from Ecuador stood at -28.2%. At the same time, Brazil (+100.3%), Suriname (+43.1%), Argentina (+12.0%) and Peru (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +100.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of Brazil (+18 p.p.), Suriname (+5.3 p.p.), Argentina (+3.6 p.p.) and Peru (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ecuador (-29.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) remains the largest cauliflower and broccoli supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Suriname, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ecuador amounted to -27.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+98.6% per year) and Suriname (+26.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

For the fourth year in a row, MERCOSUR recorded growth in overseas purchases of cauliflower and broccoli, which increased by 18% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 85%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 92%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Paraguay (X tons) was the largest importer of cauliflower and broccoli, making up 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Guyana (X tons), Suriname (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together constituting a 53% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +66.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Guyana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cauliflower and broccoli in MERCOSUR, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Suriname, with an 11% share.

In Guyana, cauliflower and broccoli imports increased at an average annual rate of +18.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+58.7% per year) and Suriname (+38.8% per year).
