Cereal Germ Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR cereal germ market shrank to $X in 2021, dropping by -6.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 18%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2021, exports of cereal germ in MERCOSUR skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 66% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 528% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cereal germ exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 197%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Argentina represented the main exporter of cereal germ in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Argentina decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Peru (+12.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Brazil (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina (+6.8 p.p.), Brazil (+3.8 p.p.) and Peru (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest cereal germ supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Argentina, cereal germ exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (-10.1% per year) and Peru (+15.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 89%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

Cereal germ imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 19% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports posted a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cereal germ imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile represented the key importer of cereal germ in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. Colombia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 29% share, followed by Brazil (15%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Colombia (with a CAGR of +25.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest cereal germ importing markets in MERCOSUR were Colombia ($X), Chile ($X) and Brazil ($X), together comprising 94% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 134% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
