In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the MERCOSUR dolomite market, when its value decreased by -4.2% to $X. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +109.2% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of chalk and dolomite exported in MERCOSUR reached X tons, with an increase of 11% on 2020. Overall, exports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 114%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dolomite exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 49%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Brazil represented the main exporter of chalk and dolomite in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), constituting a 21% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) and Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chalk and dolomite exports, with a CAGR of +9.7% from 2012 to 2021. Argentina (-3.0%), Colombia (-3.7%) and Peru (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia, Peru and Argentina saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -3.5% and -20.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest dolomite supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil totaled +9.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (-5.4% per year) and Peru (-5.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Dolomite Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, the amount of chalk and dolomite imported in MERCOSUR rose remarkably to X tons, picking up by 11% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +13.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 29%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dolomite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) were the main importers of chalk and dolomite in MERCOSUR, together comprising 83% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +24.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest dolomite importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Paraguay ($X), together comprising 84% of total imports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +23.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a deep slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
