Chalk Market Size in MERCOSUR

For the fourth year in a row, the MERCOSUR chalk market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.7% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Chalk exports contracted to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -3% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chalk exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Peru was the main exporter of chalks in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 58% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (17%). Brazil (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Peru decreased at an average annual rate of -6.1% from 2012 to 2021. Brazil (-5.3%), Colombia (-16.8%) and Argentina (-18.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Peru (+27 p.p.) and Brazil (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia and Argentina saw its share reduced by -10.2% and -18.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest chalk supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 14% share.

In Peru, chalk exports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (-9.9% per year) and Colombia (-20.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 35%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Chalk Imports

In 2021, overseas purchases of chalks were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chalk imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ecuador (X tons) and Chile (X tons) represented roughly 60% of total imports in 2021. Peru (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 31% share of total imports. Paraguay (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Ecuador ($X) and Peru ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 71% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +2.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
