Cheese And Curd Market Size in MERCOSUR
The MERCOSUR cheese and curd market fell slightly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the market value increased by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MERCOSUR
For the fourth year in a row, MERCOSUR recorded growth in overseas shipments of cheese and curd, which increased by 8.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cheese and curd exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Argentina (X tons) represented the major exporter of cheese and curd, constituting 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uruguay (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together achieving a 30% share of total exports. Brazil (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cheese and curd exports from Argentina stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Brazil (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2022. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uruguay (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina (+15 p.p.) and Brazil (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Uruguay saw its share reduced by -18.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest cheese and curd supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Argentina stood at +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uruguay (-8.3% per year) and Chile (-0.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Brazil ($X per ton) and Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) and Uruguay ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cheese And Curd Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cheese and curd, when their volume decreased by -14.3% to X tons. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +21.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, cheese and curd imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.
Imports by Country
Chile was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together creating a 39% share of total imports. Argentina (X tons), Paraguay (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Colombia (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cheese and curd importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Peru ($X), together accounting for 80% of total imports. Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Colombia, with a CAGR of +14.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Colombia ($X per ton) and Argentina ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) and Peru ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
