In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 296%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) represented the major exporters of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) in 2021, reaching approx. 44% and 38% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Uruguay (X tons), comprising an 18% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) increased by 84% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the key importer of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), creating 69% of total imports. Argentina (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Peru (6.6%) and Chile (5.4%). Colombia (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Peru (+17.1%), Colombia (+12.8%) and Ecuador (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Argentina (-5.8%) and Chile (-31.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+57 p.p.), Peru (+5.9 p.p.), Colombia (+3 p.p.), Argentina (+2.7 p.p.) and Ecuador (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Chile saw its share reduced by -69.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) in MERCOSUR, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to +9.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-5.4% per year) and Chile (-22.6% per year).
