The MERCOSUR cherry and sour cherry market declined slightly to $X in 2022, reducing by -4.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of cherry and sour cherry production was Chile (X tons), accounting for 97% of total volume. It was followed by Argentina (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Chile stood at +17.2%.

The average cherry and sour cherry yield surged to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 27% against the year before. The yield indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry yield increased by +42.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the cherry and sour cherry yield hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cherry and sour cherry harvested area declined to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -9% on the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 25%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in MERCOSUR

For the fifth consecutive year, MERCOSUR recorded growth in shipments abroad of cherries and sour cherries, which increased by 18% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of cherries and sour cherries, namely Chile, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cherries and sour cherries exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2022. Chile (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) also remains the largest cherry and sour cherry supplier in MERCOSUR.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Chile amounted to -1.5% per year.

Imports of Cherries and Sour Cherries

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X tons of cherries and sour cherries were imported in MERCOSUR; jumping by 37% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 87% of total imports. The following importers - Peru (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +33.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in MERCOSUR, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Peru, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to -1.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (+3.4% per year) and Peru (+11.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
