Chicory Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the MERCOSUR chicory market increased by 127% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after six years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a moderate expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Chicory Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, chicory production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 14%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of chicory production was Chile (X tons), comprising approx. 78% of total volume. Moreover, chicory production in Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Peru (X kg), sevenfold.

In Chile, chicory production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+0.9% per year) and Ecuador (+1.4% per year).

Exports in MERCOSUR

Chicory exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 563% on 2020 figures. In general, exports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 938%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, chicory exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a slight setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. Brazil (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chicory exports, with a CAGR of +66.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+25.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile increased by +98 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) emerged as the largest chicory supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.

In Chile, chicory exports expanded at an average annual rate of +57.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a sharp setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 137% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (-5.5%).

Chicory Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, purchases abroad of chicory increased by 87% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after six years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 800%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicory imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 2,054%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Argentina (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 96% of total imports. Uruguay (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +118.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicory in MERCOSUR, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Argentina amounted to +91.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-9.4% per year) and Uruguay (+9.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 139% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
