The MERCOSUR cigars and cigarillos market shrank to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Cigars and cigarillos exports shrank dramatically to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -86.4% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 608% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 69%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 46% of total exports. Paraguay (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Argentina (X tons). All these countries together took near 49% share of total exports. Uruguay (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -25.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+51.5%) and Colombia (+22.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +51.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Peru (-2.6%), Argentina (-6.3%) and Uruguay (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Paraguay (+20 p.p.), Peru (+13 p.p.), Colombia (+6.4 p.p.), Argentina (+5.2 p.p.) and Uruguay (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-48.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest cigars and cigarillos supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at -10.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (-3.5% per year) and Colombia (+24.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 285% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a resilient increase. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+21.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cigars And Cigarillos Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, purchases abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos decreased by -5.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 51% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Peru (X tons), Suriname (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together achieving a 42% share of total imports. Venezuela (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+28.0%) and Chile (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Suriname (-1.2%), Venezuela (-2.4%), Argentina (-2.8%) and Paraguay (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Peru (+7.7 p.p.) and Chile (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Paraguay (-1.9 p.p.), Argentina (-3.7 p.p.) and Brazil (-6.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cigars and cigarillos importing markets in MERCOSUR were Argentina ($X), Brazil ($X) and Chile ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports. Suriname, Paraguay, Venezuela and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cigars and cigarillos import price decreased by -10.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
