Clasp Knife Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the MERCOSUR clasp knife market increased by 4.7% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, clasp knife production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of clasp knives, when their volume decreased by -14.5% to X units. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +29.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 47%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, clasp knife exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +87.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X units) represented the key exporter of clasp knives, creating 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X units) and Peru (X units), together generating a 22% share of total exports. Colombia (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to clasp knife exports from Brazil stood at +1.6%. At the same time, Peru (+36.7%), Chile (+30.4%) and Colombia (+20.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +36.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Chile (+13 p.p.), Peru (+6.4 p.p.) and Colombia (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-18.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest clasp knife supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Peru ($X), with a combined 98% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +23.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Peru ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, overseas purchases of clasp knives increased by 15% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, clasp knife imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +95.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which finished at 46% of total imports. Chile (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Argentina (12%), Peru (7.8%) and Colombia (7.4%). Ecuador (X units) and Guyana (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guyana (+42.3%), Argentina (+10.3%), Peru (+7.9%), Chile (+7.9%) and Ecuador (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guyana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +42.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Colombia (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and Guyana increased by +8.5, +6.9, +3.7, +2.9 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Argentina ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Guyana, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Guyana, with a CAGR of +31.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -10.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 21%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Guyana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
