Clove Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR clove market soared to $X in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Clove Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, clove production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Brazil (X tons) remains the largest clove producing country in MERCOSUR, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

In 2022, exports of cloves in MERCOSUR dropped significantly to X tons, waning by -33.7% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 1,999%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, clove exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 2,287% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main exporter of cloves in MERCOSUR, mixing up 99% of total export.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cloves exports, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) also remains the largest clove supplier in MERCOSUR.

In Brazil, clove exports increased at an average annual rate of +18.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, rising by 49% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Brazil.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Brazil amounted to +0.5% per year.

Clove Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

Clove imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 57% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 87%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, clove imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -11.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Peru (X tons) represented the key importer of cloves, comprising 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together committing a 39% share of total imports. Venezuela (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Peru was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cloves imports, with a CAGR of +9.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+9.5%), Chile (+6.2%), Colombia (+5.8%) and Ecuador (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Venezuela (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Peru (+15 p.p.) and Argentina (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ecuador, Venezuela and Brazil saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -5.2% and -6.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Peru ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cloves in MERCOSUR, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Peru amounted to +11.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-1.8% per year) and Colombia (-3.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
