Coarse Animal Hair Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the MERCOSUR coarse animal hair market, when its value decreased by -10.4% to $X. In general, consumption recorded a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of coarse animal hair increased by 97% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 314% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coarse animal hair exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 116%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uruguay represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), comprising a 25% share of total exports. Peru (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Uruguay increased at an average annual rate of +33.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+40.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +40.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uruguay and Peru increased by +68 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the largest coarse animal hair supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In Uruguay, coarse animal hair exports expanded at an average annual rate of +27.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-25.6% per year) and Peru (+27.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, falling by -32.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (-4.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of coarse animal hair, when their volume increased by 8.6% to X kg. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coarse animal hair imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 75%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Peru represented the largest importer of coarse animal hair in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports reaching X kg, which was near 74% of total imports in 2022. Chile (X kg) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Argentina (5.8%).

Imports into Peru decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+33.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Chile (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Argentina (+5.6 p.p.) and Chile (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Peru (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Peru ($X), Chile ($X) and Argentina ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +37.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -8.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
