In value terms, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production of growth remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres was Brazil (X tons), accounting for 76% of total volume. Moreover, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ecuador (X tons), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Ecuador (+0.8% per year) and Colombia (-0.6% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in MERCOSUR declined to X tons per ha, which is down by -2% compared with the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres production in MERCOSUR contracted to X ha, standing approx. at 2021. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MERCOSUR
Exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres contracted to X tons in 2022, declining by -6.6% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main exporter of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, constituting 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), creating a 26% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres. At the same time, Colombia (+54.8%) and Ecuador (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +54.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Colombia and Ecuador increased by +4.1 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Ecuador ($X) and Colombia ($X), together accounting for 99.9% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +57.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Coconut, Abaca, Ramie and other Vegetable Textile Fibres
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, when their volume decreased by -24.7% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 138%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 132%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Peru was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 76% of total imports. Chile (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Ecuador (5.1%) and Colombia (5%). Uruguay (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Peru was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres imports, with a CAGR of +58.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uruguay (+43.5%), Colombia (+31.1%), Chile (+30.6%) and Ecuador (+19.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Peru (+54 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Colombia, Chile and Ecuador saw its share reduced by -4.8%, -11% and -21.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Peru ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in MERCOSUR, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Peru stood at +44.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (+37.4% per year) and Colombia (+25.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
