Coconut Oil Market Size in MERCOSUR
The MERCOSUR coconut oil market declined to $X in 2022, waning by -4.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, posted strong growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Coconut Oil Production in MERCOSUR
In value terms, coconut oil production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 190% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, approx. X tons of coconut (copra) oil were exported in MERCOSUR; growing by 391% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coconut oil exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a notable expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Uruguay was the largest exporter of coconut (copra) oil in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. Chile (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Brazil (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 21% share of total exports.
Exports from Uruguay increased at an average annual rate of +58.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+145.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +145.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Brazil (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uruguay and Chile increased by +76 and +16 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uruguay ($X) emerged as the largest coconut oil supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
In Uruguay, coconut oil exports increased at an average annual rate of +53.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+107.9% per year) and Brazil (+7.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, waning by -35.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Coconut Oil Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, supplies from abroad of coconut (copra) oil decreased by -24.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coconut oil imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the major importer of coconut (copra) oil, mixing up 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together comprising a 43% share of total imports. Colombia (X tons), Suriname (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ecuador (with a CAGR of +66.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Chile ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 80% of total imports. Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay and Suriname lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Ecuador, with a CAGR of +55.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coconut oil import price increased by +50.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 39%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Suriname (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
