Coffee Extract Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the MERCOSUR coffee extract market, when its value decreased by -4.9% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Coffee Extract Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, coffee extract production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 7.6%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports in MERCOSUR

Coffee extract exports expanded to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 4.3% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, coffee extract exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 71% of total exports. Colombia (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ecuador (12%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coffee extract exports from Brazil stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Colombia (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ecuador (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Colombia (+5.8 p.p.) and Brazil (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ecuador saw its share reduced by -7.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest coffee extract supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Ecuador ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +1.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Coffee Extract Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were imported in MERCOSUR; with an increase of 8.3% on 2020. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.4% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, coffee extract imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Argentina (X tons), Chile (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) was the major importer of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in MERCOSUR, creating 80% of total import. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), committing a 7.8% share of total imports. The following importers - Paraguay (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - each reached a 6.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest coffee extract importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Peru ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +11.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
