Imports in MERCOSUR

Vegetable or animal colouring matter imports rose sharply to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 8.1% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +1.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, vegetable or animal colouring matter imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. In 2021, Colombia (X tons) represented the major importer of colouring matter of vegetable or animal origin, constituting 46% of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Peru (10%), Brazil (9.9%), Argentina (6.6%) and Chile (4.7%).

Colombia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the colouring matter of vegetable or animal origin imports, with a CAGR of +13.9% from 2012 to 2021. The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
