Totaliser Market Size in MERCOSUR
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the MERCOSUR totaliser market, when its value increased by 66% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, totaliser production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, overseas shipments of continuous and discontinuous totalisers decreased by -39% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 96%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, totaliser exports expanded to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 133%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Brazil was the key exporter of continuous and discontinuous totalisers in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was near 50% of total exports in 2021. Ecuador (X units) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Argentina (16%) and Uruguay (5.8%). The following exporters - Chile (X units) and Peru (X units) - each amounted to a 4.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to totaliser exports from Brazil stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Ecuador (+28.4%), Uruguay (+5.8%) and Argentina (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012-2021. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ecuador (+19 p.p.), Argentina (+2.4 p.p.) and Uruguay (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Peru (-6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest totaliser supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 13% share.
In Brazil, totaliser exports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (-1.7% per year) and Uruguay (+19.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 68% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per unit), while Ecuador ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Totaliser Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, approx. X units of continuous and discontinuous totalisers were imported in MERCOSUR; with an increase of 21% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, totaliser imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Chile prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was near 85% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X units), committing an 8.7% share of total imports. Colombia (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the continuous and discontinuous totalisers imports, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Colombia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile increased by +25 percentage points.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Colombia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 63% of total imports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of -6.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -33.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Chile ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
