In 2021, the MERCOSUR cotton linters market decreased by -31.4% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption recorded a deep downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cotton linters exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 70%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Brazil prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cotton linters exports, with a CAGR of +7.1% from 2012 to 2021. Argentina (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil increased by +9 percentage points.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest cotton linters supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 2% share of total exports.

In Brazil, cotton linters exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Argentina amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-5.2%).

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cotton linters decreased by -17.2% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 104% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton linters imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Argentina represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 36% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Venezuela (X tons), Chile (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together generating a 60% share of total imports. The following importers - Ecuador (X tons) and Peru (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Venezuela (with a CAGR of +101.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Colombia ($X) and Argentina ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Venezuela, with a CAGR of +69.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
