Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, the amount of crispbread exported in MERCOSUR expanded markedly to X tons, growing by 5.7% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, crispbread exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Suriname (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together recording 98% of total export.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +26.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the largest crispbread supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Suriname ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Colombia amounted to +33.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Suriname (+9.0% per year) and Argentina (-17.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Suriname ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of crispbread increased by 8.7% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, crispbread imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Chile was the main importer of crispbread in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2021. Venezuela (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X tons), Guyana (X tons), Suriname (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 56% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to crispbread imports into Chile stood at +19.5%. At the same time, Peru (+38.8%), Uruguay (+15.3%) and Brazil (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +38.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guyana (-1.1%), Ecuador (-6.0%), Suriname (-9.0%) and Venezuela (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile, Peru and Uruguay increased by +27, +12 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crispbread in MERCOSUR, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Venezuela ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile totaled +20.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Venezuela (-11.9% per year) and Brazil (+6.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
