The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Peru (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together accounting for 83% of total production. Venezuela, Ecuador and Guyana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Guyana (with a CAGR of +6.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cucumber and gherkin yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at 2021. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cucumbers and gherkins were harvested in MERCOSUR; which is down by -2.7% against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 6.6% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of cucumbers and gherkins, when their volume increased by 10% to X tons. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 249%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) was the main exporter of cucumbers and gherkins in MERCOSUR, mixing up 87% of total export. It was distantly followed by Venezuela (X tons), committing a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +86.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 19% share.

In Ecuador, cucumber and gherkin exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+56.6% per year) and Colombia (+26.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -14.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cucumber and gherkin export price decreased by -36.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 73%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of cucumbers and gherkins, when their volume increased by 161% to X tons. In general, imports posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 299%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 185%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Paraguay dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 97% of total imports in 2022. Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Paraguay increased at an average annual rate of +17.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+38.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Paraguay and Argentina increased by +29 and +2.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Paraguay ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cucumbers and gherkins in MERCOSUR, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Paraguay totaled +16.7%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, waning by -18.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a perceptible curtailment.
