Dried Prune Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2022, dried prune exports in MERCOSUR skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 28% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dried prune exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +78.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Chile was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total exports.
Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried prunes exports, with a CAGR of -1.0% from 2012 to 2022. Argentina (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+7.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-7.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest dried prune supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports.
In Chile, dried prune exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 55%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina totaled $X per ton.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, approx. X tons of dried prunes were imported in MERCOSUR; dropping by -12.3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dried prune imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +46.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 56% of total imports. Peru (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Colombia (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Uruguay (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) - each finished at a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried prune imports into Brazil stood at -6.8%. At the same time, Chile (+4.2%), Colombia (+2.1%), Ecuador (+1.8%), Peru (+1.7%) and Uruguay (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +4.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Peru (+6.2 p.p.), Colombia (+5.9 p.p.), Chile (+4.8 p.p.) and Ecuador (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-5.6 p.p.) and Brazil (-11.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried prunes in MERCOSUR, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Peru, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to +1.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+5.5% per year) and Peru (+4.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 80%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
