Dry Bean Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR dry bean market rose markedly to $X in 2022, surging by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Dry Bean Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, dry bean production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Brazil (X tons) remains the largest dry bean producing country in MERCOSUR, accounting for 73% of total volume. Moreover, dry bean production in Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Argentina (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Peru (X tons), with a 2.7% share.

In Brazil, dry bean production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+3.6% per year) and Peru (-1.6% per year).

In 2022, the average dry bean yield in MERCOSUR fell slightly to X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 9.2%. Over the period under review, the dry bean yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of beans (dry) were harvested in MERCOSUR; leveling off at 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the dry bean harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

Dry bean exports shrank to X tons in 2022, which is down by -13% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports from Argentina increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Venezuela (+36.2%) and Brazil (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Venezuela emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +36.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Peru (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil and Venezuela increased by +12 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest dry bean supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 10% share.

In Argentina, dry bean exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+12.4% per year) and Peru (+0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, purchases abroad of beans (dry) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, faced a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 96% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the main importer of beans (dry) in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 46% of total imports in 2022. Colombia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Venezuela (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Peru (X tons). All these countries together took near 52% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest dry bean importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Venezuela ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. Chile and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Chile, with a CAGR of +4.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Chile ($X per ton) and Colombia ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) and Venezuela ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
