The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of durum wheat production was Argentina (X tons), comprising approx. 64% of total volume. Moreover, durum wheat production in Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Brazil (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Chile (X tons), with a 4.4% share.
In Argentina, durum wheat production increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Brazil (+4.9% per year) and Chile (+0.6% per year).
The average durum wheat yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the year before. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 15%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of durum wheat were harvested in MERCOSUR; remaining constant against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Durum Wheat Exports
Exports in MERCOSUR
Durum wheat exports declined sharply to X tons in 2022, which is down by -97.7% against 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,737% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 3,887%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Argentina dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Paraguay (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the durum wheat exports, with a CAGR of -35.4% from 2012 to 2022. Paraguay (-40.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Argentina increased by +20 percentage points.
In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest durum wheat supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Paraguay ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Argentina amounted to -38.2%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -67.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 117%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per ton), while Argentina amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+6.4%).
Durum Wheat Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, imports of durum wheat in MERCOSUR amounted to X tons, increasing by 2.8% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, durum wheat imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Ecuador prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 85% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Peru (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.
Imports into Ecuador increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brazil (+142.7%) and Chile (+20.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +142.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Peru (-9.6%) and Venezuela (-29.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ecuador (+60 p.p.), Brazil (+3.6 p.p.) and Chile (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Peru and Venezuela saw its share reduced by -6.1% and -59.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Ecuador ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported durum wheat in MERCOSUR, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ecuador totaled +7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (-6.4% per year) and Brazil (+132.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Venezuela (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
