Eggplant Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR eggplant market was estimated at $X in 2022, increasing by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, posted a prominent increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Eggplant Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, eggplant production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 103%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Guyana (X tons) remains the largest eggplant producing country in MERCOSUR, accounting for 61% of total volume. Moreover, eggplant production in Guyana exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Venezuela (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Guyana amounted to +32.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Venezuela (+6.0% per year) and Colombia (+15.0% per year).

In 2022, the average eggplant yield in MERCOSUR reduced to X tons per ha, falling by -3.6% compared with the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 88%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The eggplant harvested area totaled X ha in 2022, flattening at 2021. The total harvested area indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant harvested area decreased by -0.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to eggplant production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Eggplant Exports

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, shipments abroad of eggplants (aubergines) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 72%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, eggplant exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the largest exporter of eggplants (aubergines) in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. Venezuela (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Colombia (X tons) and Argentina (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant exports from Brazil stood at +38.4%. At the same time, Colombia (+40.8%), Argentina (+22.7%), Venezuela (+5.5%) and Peru (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012-2022. Brazil (+69 p.p.), Colombia (+5.6 p.p.), Venezuela (+5.4 p.p.) and Argentina (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Venezuela ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to +51.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Venezuela (+4.5% per year) and Peru (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 87% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Eggplant Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the amount of eggplants (aubergines) imported in MERCOSUR surged to X tons, rising by 22% on the year before. In general, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 211% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, eggplant imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 189%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Paraguay (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) represented the largest importers of eggplants (aubergines) in 2022, finishing at approx. 49% and 40% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), mixing up a 10% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Paraguay (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest eggplant importing markets in MERCOSUR were Venezuela ($X), Argentina ($X) and Paraguay ($X), with a combined 97% share of total imports.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +24.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
