Envelope Market Size in MERCOSUR
In 2021, the MERCOSUR envelope market increased by 5.5% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Envelope Production in MERCOSUR
In value terms, envelope production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 6.2%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Envelope Exports
Exports in MERCOSUR
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of envelopes increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, envelope exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Peru (X tons) represented the major exporter of envelopes, constituting 63% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Argentina (13%). Paraguay (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Peru decreased at an average annual rate of -10.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Paraguay (+54.0%) and Ecuador (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +54.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Brazil (-10.2%), Argentina (-14.7%) and Colombia (-24.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Peru, Paraguay and Ecuador increased by +7, +2.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest envelope supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 14% share.
In Peru, envelope exports contracted by an average annual rate of -7.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (-5.4% per year) and Argentina (-14.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Envelope Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, the amount of envelopes imported in MERCOSUR rose notably to X tons, picking up by 12% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 38%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, envelope imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Chile was the largest importer of envelopes in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 39% of total imports in 2021. Colombia (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Peru (12%), Guyana (11%), Suriname (6.1%), Uruguay (6.1%) and Brazil (5.1%).
Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of envelopes. At the same time, Colombia (+29.3%) and Peru (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2021. Guyana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-4.7%), Suriname (-12.9%) and Uruguay (-16.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile, Colombia, Peru and Guyana increased by +20, +13, +8.9 and +5.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported envelopes in MERCOSUR, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+32.6% per year) and Brazil (+2.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 50%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
