Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, shipments abroad of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filter block exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -3.4% against 2020 indices. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Argentina (X tons) was the key exporter of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, constituting 58% of total exports. Chile (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 29% share, followed by Brazil (11%). Peru (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest filter block supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 5.8% share.

In Argentina, filter block exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+4.1% per year) and Brazil (-10.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, filter block imports in MERCOSUR contracted to X tons, reducing by -6.8% against the year before. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, filter block imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile represented the key importer of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2022. Brazil (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons). All these countries together took near 50% share of total imports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp imports, with a CAGR of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+1.6%) and Colombia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Uruguay (-1.8%), Brazil (-6.3%) and Argentina (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+21 p.p.), Peru (+3.8 p.p.) and Colombia (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-5.1 p.p.) and Brazil (-7.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Argentina ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 75% of total imports. Peru, Colombia and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Among the main importing countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +4.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
