In 2021, shipments abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines decreased by -4.7% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Chile (X tons) represented the largest exporter of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines, committing 44% of total exports. Colombia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Uruguay (15%) and Peru (13%). Paraguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Paraguay (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 0.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 0.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile totaled -4.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+9.2% per year) and Peru (+6.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines, when their volume increased by 13% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Peru (X tons) and Guyana (X tons) - each finished at a 4.2% share of total imports.
Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines. At the same time, Peru (+20.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012-2021. Guyana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Brazil (+14 p.p.) and Peru (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines in MERCOSUR, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 0.6% share of total imports.
In Brazil, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports decreased by an average annual rate of -5.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+2.5% per year) and Guyana (+1.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Guyana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guyana (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
