The MERCOSUR market for gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles contracted to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 6.8%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +63.1% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports amounted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Brazil represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 47% of total exports. Peru (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Colombia (13%) and Argentina (12%). Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +11.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 13% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles, when their volume decreased by -2.7% to X tons. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In 2022, Chile (X tons), distantly followed by Paraguay (X tons), Venezuela (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Peru (X tons) represented the largest importers of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles, together mixing up 94% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Paraguay ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 51% of total imports. Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, Ecuador and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
