Colombia was the main exporter of goat or kid hides and skins in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2021. The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -66.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 49% against the previous year. In 2021, purchases abroad of goat or kid hides and skins increased by 7.5% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 77% of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Argentina (X tons) and Colombia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total imports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the goat or kid hides and skins imports, with a CAGR of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021. Argentina (-2.3%), Ecuador (-16.1%) and Colombia (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina, with a CAGR of +26.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 62% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, goat hides and skins import price increased by +74.8% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
