In 2021, overseas shipments of gypsum and anhydrite increased by 34% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Peru (X tons) represented the largest exporter of gypsum and anhydrite, mixing up 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), creating a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of -6.2%).

In value terms, Peru ($X) emerged as the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

In Peru, gypsum and anhydrite exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, gypsum and anhydrite export price decreased by -40.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Argentina totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+6.6%).

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, approx. X tons of gypsum and anhydrite were imported in MERCOSUR; growing by 44% on 2020. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Colombia (X tons) was the largest importer of gypsum and anhydrite, achieving 53% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Chile (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - each finished at a 4.3% share of total imports.

Imports into Colombia increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+11.1%), Paraguay (+6.0%), Chile (+4.3%), Ecuador (+3.6%) and Peru (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uruguay (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Paraguay increased by +7.9, +7.6, +2.7, +2.6 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum and anhydrite in MERCOSUR, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 12% share.

In Colombia, gypsum and anhydrite imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (+11.7% per year) and Brazil (+21.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 17%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
