Hazelnut Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, hazelnut production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Chile (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hazelnut production, accounting for 99% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Chile totaled +21.7%.

In 2021, the average yield of hazelnuts in MERCOSUR expanded significantly to X tons per ha, with an increase of 8.8% on 2020. The yield indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut yield decreased by -7.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the hazelnut yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of hazelnuts in MERCOSUR totaled X ha, leveling off at 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, shipments abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -38.9% to X tons, falling for the seventh year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports recorded a precipitous setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X tons) was the key exporter of hazelnuts, creating 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), comprising a 22% share of total exports.

Exports from Chile decreased at an average annual rate of -22.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Argentina (+25.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +25.2% from 2012-2021. Argentina (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Chile saw its share reduced by -22.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

In Chile, hazelnut exports plunged by an average annual rate of -22.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Chile stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+2.0%).

Hazelnut Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, imports of hazelnuts in MERCOSUR contracted notably to X tons, shrinking by -21.2% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hazelnut imports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), creating a 5.2% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut imports into Brazil stood at -16.2%. At the same time, Peru (+17.1%) and Ecuador (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil, Peru and Ecuador increased by +20, +5 and +3.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in MERCOSUR, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 4.2% share of total imports.

In Brazil, hazelnut imports plunged by an average annual rate of -14.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (-1.7% per year) and Peru (+8.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut import price increased by +23.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
