In 2021, Argentina (X tons) was the key exporter of herrings (prepared or preserved), constituting 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), committing a 12% share of total exports.
Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the herrings (prepared or preserved) exports, with a CAGR of +34.8% from 2012 to 2021. Ecuador (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Argentina (+75 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ecuador (-47.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest preserved herring supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Argentina totaled +20.0%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Argentina stood at $X per ton.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, supplies from abroad of herrings (prepared or preserved) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved herring imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Uruguay (X tons) was the major importer of herrings (prepared or preserved), constituting 38% of total imports. Chile (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guyana (16%), Colombia (9.4%), Ecuador (6.3%) and Argentina (4.6%). Suriname (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Ecuador (with a CAGR of +57.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest preserved herring importing markets in MERCOSUR were Uruguay ($X), Chile ($X) and Colombia ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports. Guyana, Argentina, Ecuador and Suriname lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
Ecuador, with a CAGR of +63.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Guyana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
