Industrial Roundwood Market Size in MERCOSUR
The MERCOSUR industrial roundwood market fell modestly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, industrial roundwood production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, industrial roundwood exports in MERCOSUR shrank modestly to X cubic meters, reducing by -2.8% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, industrial roundwood exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 54%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Uruguay represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X cubic meters, which accounted for 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X cubic meters), committing an 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - Suriname (X cubic meters) and Argentina (X cubic meters) - together made up 5.4% of total exports.
Exports from Uruguay increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brazil (+50.9%), Argentina (+28.2%) and Suriname (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Brazil (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Uruguay (-14.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the largest industrial roundwood supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Suriname, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uruguay totaled +9.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+35.2% per year) and Suriname (+7.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 22%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Suriname ($X per cubic meter), while Argentina ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Industrial Roundwood Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, supplies from abroad of industrial roundwood increased by 67% to X cubic meters, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 87%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, industrial roundwood imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Peru (X cubic meters) represented the main importer of industrial roundwood, generating 52% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X cubic meters) and Uruguay (X cubic meters), together achieving a 38% share of total imports. Argentina (X cubic meters), Colombia (X cubic meters) and Venezuela (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Peru was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial roundwood imports, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+5.8%) and Uruguay (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Brazil (-2.0%), Colombia (-4.8%) and Venezuela (-22.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Peru and Uruguay increased by +31 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest industrial roundwood importing markets in MERCOSUR were Peru ($X), Uruguay ($X) and Brazil ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports.
Peru, with a CAGR of +18.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, with an increase of 1.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, industrial roundwood import price decreased by -16.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per cubic meter), while Brazil ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Venezuela (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
